Queen is a title generally referring to female monarchs. It may be honorific, as in some cases with Goddesses or where it is gained by marriage, or it may apply to a female ruler fully invested with titular powers of their particular state or realm in her own right. Not all female rulers are referred to as queens, such as the case with A'issem the Chieftess of Aran'riod and most female city leaders. Where a queen is head of an empire, she is generally referred to as an empress, although not all empires address their queens as such as seen in the instance of the Seleucarian Empire. Finally, in the animal kingdom it is not uncommon for social species such as ants and termites to form colonies about one or more fertile females also referred to as queens.
