The Protean Relics are a collection of very ancient and powerful items forged by Proteus during the days of the Chaos Wars. He reportedly placed them in a reliquary, to be guarded by Kaphlos, the son of the Aldar Dekalb. This reliquary was later sealed away, its chambers lost to all knowledge.

The rapid burrowing of the enormous Dala'myrr during the rise of Bal'met caused tears in the ether that were discovered first by Maklak during the Reckoning of the Conclave, and then by Yudhishthira as he was searching for the source of Maklak's power.

These ether tears were then discovered by adventurers initially working under the direction of Yudhishthira in the mid-seventh century, and then by the world at large. Located in unstable Digsites, adventurers tunneled through them, enduring occasional deadly collapses, and found their way to individual Chambers in the Reliquary that held the relics. Adventurers gathered them up now and then to make limited use of their deadly capabilities but ever they remained curiosities, never able to be kept or in one place for very long.

The power-infused antiques slowly vanished from place and recollection in 919 AF, gathered beyond time by demonic hand unseen. Fluctuations of memory brought adventurers to Falaq'tor, where different stories brought to prompted Pryla'ari to reason that someone or something was tampering with Time, robbing timestream of Proteus' tools one by one.

Bedecked in the Protean relics, the Prince of the Inferno suddenly reappeared in 922 to plunged towards Achaea in fury. With the Yggdrasil's Seed and the Eye of Discord in his claws he reduced the unguarded Garden of the Gods to rubble. With the might of Earthshaker he shattered the eonic Tomaculan statue to free the Elder God Khalas from His imprisonment.

Battle raged across Creation at the behest of the self-proclaimed New God, the zenith of war brought the pantheon to Black Pazuzu's stronghold on Memory. After Pazuzu was slain, a remnant of the relics were locked away by Prospero save two: the Golden Chain and the Diadem of Ugrach were entrusted to Slith in exchange for his cooperation in the felling of the Demon Prince.
