Shipraces are open to any captain or ship owner who wishes to join the event. Once the shiprace has started, crews move their vessels onto any of the starting line locations to begin the race. Competitors then proceed through each leg of the event, each trying to pass through all the markers before their opponents. After each section is complete captains continue on towards the finish line. The race ends when everyone has been notified that the last ship has reached the finish line.
The courses in a shiprace are as follows:
- Course 1 - 5 legs
- This course starts/ends about 145 east and 85 south of Tasur'ke with a general southwestern flow between Ulangi and the mainland, around Ulangi, and back.
- Course 2 - 11 legs
- This course starts/ends north of Clockwork Isle. It flows southwest to pass between Mysia and Ulangi before traversing around Zanzibaar. Then, it wiggles around a bit more to the finish line.
- Course 3 - 13 legs
- This course starts/ends south of the Aalen. It winds east through an open area of choppy water, the path made more challenging by sharp turns and short straights.
- Course 4 - 7 legs
- This course starts/ends north of Polyargos. Its general flow is in counter-clockwise direction around the islands of Tapoa and Shala-Khulia.
