Icons are large constructs located on the plane of Nishnatoba composed of the residual magics and forces released there during the War of Humanity. The Pentad crafted the Icons to allow the House that was associated with it to tap into the latent power of the war ravaged plane and bestow benefits upon its members. While the Icon is tied to the land upon which it rests, it is capable of casting a shadow of itself upon the Prime Material Plane that acts as a planar gateway between the two planes of existence.

The Icons themselves, being constructs of energy, degrade slowly due to the entropic resonance left behind by the war so long ago. The Icon's ability to channel power across the void between dimensions to its recipient House is tied to its strength. Benefits bestowed by the icon can become erratic as the icon's ability to reach the prime plane weakens, eventually coming to the point where the Icon can no longer reach past the veils between worlds. Once the Icon has fallen to half its max capacity it enters a point of stasis where the degradation stops and the power falls no further by normal means. To combat the entropy, Iconic Shards can be placed in contact with the Icon's true form and absorbed to empower it.

Icons can also be brought down through the use of Icon Alchemists. Able to strike the icons on an unseen level, they draw out the power stored within the icon beyond the normal limits, and given enough time, collapse the metaphysical structure of the icon all together. Should the Icon be aligned with one of the 24 Icon Phases, however, then only during the aligned phase may the Icon be damaged at all.
