Despite his filthy, lice-ridden appearance, Maric, the ratman, is a respected figure in Mhaldor, serving both as the city tutor and rat buyer. He is knowledgeable in many things about the city and its history. To the amusement of Mhaldorians, he has a long-lasting friendship with Groukar and a crush on Juliet the Guide.
