Blade Captain Matic Ridley was the only known lettered hobgoblin to survive the War of the Deeps. He was dulkurio-ma or Servant Who Thinks to the Tsol'teth Overlord Agith'maal.
He was promoted to Sa-dulkurio-ma or Greatest Thinking Servant when his brother was slain by the Tsol'teth Overlord. The latter had killed him because the hobgoblin had seen him afraid. From then, Matic's duty was to write down what they said and attend to smaller matters beneath his notice. During the preparations of the Tsol'teth invasion, it was also his duty to follow Terrin'ukia teach the other monsters about Tezlari-tarin or the World of Light that is Sapience. From his time with his masters, he learned much about Sapience, Seleucar and to speak Achaean
Because of Matic's rank, only he was spared from the fate that befell his fellow hobgoblins and goblins, for his kind was harmed by the light of the sun of the world above. The Tsol'teth worked magics on him so that he might survive the harsh climate above but such magics required resources that were not in great quantity. As an alternative, his masters slew his brethren and extracted from them spiral ribbons of future creation and altered them so that they might become more powerful and be capable of seeing in the bright lights of the world above. Matic was tasked with leading them to their deaths in order that this might be accomplished and he was filled with great bitterness over it.
The process of altering and training the monsters took about a century to complete. During this time, Matic's resolve to betray his masters became hardened as he realised the madness of his masters and how their only intent was total destruction. The race that he was born into had been annhilated save for himself, they were no longer like the ones he had grown up with and were only interested in eating, slaughter and fornication. They had destroyed all that was good and weak within the hobgoblin race and the other slave races.
The War of the Deeps would never have been won if not for Matic's betrayal of the Tsol'teth invaders, where he ripped off the cloak of darkness that protected Agith'maal from the harmful rays of the sun and stabbed him in the back. Then rescued by the Seleucarian defenders, he revealed to the late Warleader Lockwood the secret of slaying the Tsol'teth - removing their hearts.
Today, Matic Ridley is remembered with a permanent place as a Legend in the arena game Balance of Power.
