The Forging Song

I place the coal into the forge,
And push the bellows down,
I lay the steel upon the top,
There's no one else around.

This hammer is my master,
It slaves me day and night,
I beat and shape the metal there,
Until it looks just right.

Dawn is nearly breaking,
I'm still here, just the same,
No lack of sleep, nor hunger pains,
Will keep me from this fame.

I prefer the silence,
And the sound of falling rain,
That accompanies my hammer,
On my foggy window-pane.

My eyesight's getting better,
And I see that I am done..
But this sword isn't quite so good,
So scrap-metal, it becomes.

The sizzling of the barrel,
As I plunge the broadsword in...
This sword could be the one that fells
Lord Taug, in Kasmarkin.

Or it could end Yudhishthira's reign,
On Polyargos Isle,
Or wipe the bloody smirk away,
From Belladona's smile.

Or maybe even end the life,
Of a former loved-one, dear,
So tragic, yet so beautiful,
In every inch of steel.

The many different outcomes,
Each hammer-strike so true...
The endless possibilities,
I offer, friend, to you.

A legacy of cloth and steel,
This art means much to me,
I hold the future in my hands,
To sell to you, you see.

So remember when you hold my sword,
And see the blade strike true,
My friend, I only craft the thing,
The rest is up to you.
