Many years ago, when all the world was out of sorts,

Lord Lupus looked to His shrines. Of prey there was no sort.

Annoyed with lack of hunting, to his quill he went

And issued a challenge to the world, so hunting wasn't spent.

For two long months we ran about, in search of things to kill.

Forestals made small fortunes selling every type of fill.

Hunting grounds stayed empty as the Garden's shrines grew fat.

It was many, many years ago. Still I remember that...

The month the news was posted all Sapience was abuzz.

The greatest test of endurance ever issued, it was.

Books were made, odds were set, soveriegns flew around.

And all of this was long before the hunting trumpets' sound.

For two long months we ran about, in search of things to kill.

Forestals made small fortunes selling every type of fill.

Hunting grounds stayed empty as the Garden's shrines grew fat.

It was many, many years ago. Still I remember that...

Not long after that Serenade, the world ran to the wilds.

We slew everything that stood, beast or man or child.

Soon the rankings did go up. Boggled did our eyes

When we saw the leading hunters had multiplied our scores by five.

Panicky the most of us ran to find larger prey,

But the leaders only grew their lead every single day.

So many of us dropped out with a consolation prize

As the eventual winners' scores continued to still rise.

When the final horns did sound, we stood agog in disarray.

Famous hunters all were the ones who won the day.

When we all went home to honour them, we did discover that

Every city was near-silent.

Those great hunters all killed rats.
