As they were used primarily for ramming, their narrow shape was designed to combine a maximum of maneuverability  and speed with a large number of rowers. Triremes fell into disuse sometime before the founding of the [[Seleucarian Empire]], though in the times of [[Amphites]] they provided the bulk of the [[Ashtan]]i armada.
