Note: A villanelle consists of five tercets and a four-line envoy. It operates on two rhymes in the pattern (A1)b(A2) ab(A1) ab(A2) ab(A1) ab(A2) ab(A1)(A2), where (A1) and (A2) also rhyme with each other and repeat throughout the poem. _Verses scribbled in crude charcoal on a scrap of dirt-smeared parchment, deep within the Temple of Vengeance:_ Revenged ----- To wreak a sacred Vengeance is my aim. Upon Keresis' eb'ny snake and crow, I give myself to Blackrock's purple flame. A trip to Maya's halls goes to the Dame Of honour that includes backstabbing blows; To wreak a sacred Vengeance is my aim At she who plays a double-sided game While falling in my Lady's realm. And so I give myself to Blackrock's purple flame And pray for favored blessing just the same As fire bathes me with a violet glow; To wreak a sacred Vengeance is my aim. On tainted Iv'ry Mark I'll lay the blame For sweet revenge against a mighty foe. I give myself to Blackrock's purple flame So that I might invoke my Mother's name, In drawing forth a sword of suffered woe; To wreak a sacred Vengeance is my aim. I give myself to Blackrock's purple flame.
