Maklak, the ice wizard once resided in a tower in the northern tundras of the continent of Sapience. With the help of his apprentices, he created golems and shards of ice to help protect his tower that persist even now in his absence. He considered himself a most powerful wizard and was a member of the mysterious Conclave, alongside the wizard Hycanthus, Haag the Swamp Witch, O'ising, Yriluawe shaman, and Yudhishthira, the red dragon of Polyargos.

In the year 656 AF, the wizard Maklak challenged Yudhishthira for the leadership of said Conclave, in what came to be known as the Conclave Reckoning. Said battle was eventually lost, however, and the ice mage was sentenced to imprisonment for 100 years. A century later, Maklak would immediately seek to once more complete his end of the bargain with Sllshya by flooding the world. In his attempt to do so, he accidentally enraged the Sorceress of the Seas, who chased him to the World Tree. Climbing to the Elemental Embassy, the wizard demanded an audience with the Great Ocean but was denied. In a fury, he slew many elemental guardians and destroyed much of the embassy but the emissaries themselves were unaffected. At last tiring of him, Asahana shallowed the ice wizard, imprisoning him once more, this time at the heart of the Elemental Plane of Water.

The ice-infused Maklak mystical card is named for him, direct counter to the fire-touched Yudhishthira card.
