The Thin Line Between Love and Hate
(or Two Letters, by Sylvance DeFleur)

14 Valnuary 635

Esteemed Hierarch, the following missive was intercepted during the recent skirmishes with our imitators on the Isle. The cipher was most taxing, yet after a few painstaking hours I have discerned the correct order of each word and restored the punctuation to my best approximation. It seems that we have successfully turned the target. I enclose the translated letter. If it is not too bold, it is my wish that this competent service will be taken into consideration alongside my existing application to be Named.

In Shadow,

Your servant

Dear Nagarina,

I have decided that I will remain with you no longer. Will I continue to fight? Your advisors - idiots - can make that choice. If they wish to, I will crush them. My paranoia, my ambition, my outspokenness; all these things remain. In the past I was foolish, now I shall be strong and look to your enemies. I give one warning, that any further hostilities will result in dire outcomes.

I have made the decision: to stay despite our differences, this would be folly. Leaving the Naga so that I can grow unstifled, I think, this is the only way forward. Let our relationship blossom as enmity and strife. I cannot tolerate further the rumours that I secretly worked against you.

Never yours,

V

Lord Hierarch, blessed and annointed of Shadow, a thousand pardons and leal penance in advance at my possible error. It is critical that ANY attempts to approach the target be aborted IMMEDIATELY. I have spent the last day phased, and hidden in the red mist, observing both the target and his House from afar, and the behaviour of neither was congruent with the letter I intercepted. If anything, they appear to be on better terms than ever before. Due to this inconsistency, I revisited the letter. I am shamed to admit that it is possible that I inserted the punctuation incorrectly, so I humbly submit this revised version. Please do not think I presume overmuch, but I must state that anyone at all might have made this mistake.

Dear Nagarina,

I will crush them: my paranoia, my ambition, my outspokenness. All these things remain in the past. I was foolish. Now I shall be strong and, look!, to your enemies I give one warning, that any further hostilities will result in dire outcomes.

I have made the decision to stay, despite our differences. This would be folly: Leaving the Naga. So that I can grow, unstifled, I think this is the only way forward. Let our relationship blossom, as enmity and strife I cannot tolerate. Further, the rumours that I secretly worked against you? Never!

Yours,
