Utilising knowledge of the sun's passage through the sky, a Mariner's Sextant can be used by crew at the helm of a ship to determine their latitude and position. Since the sextant determines latitude by measuring how far above the horizon the sun is while at its highest point, accurate sightings can only be taken at noon.
