More than once while flying through the skies over Sapience I've wondered at those without wings, forced to remain landbound. That is why when I challenged myself to write a Villanelle style poem, I chose the point of view of a human wishing to be Atavian.

"Longing for Wings"

Atavians soaring through the night sky
Dancing along the clouds as they play
How I long to join them as they fly

I've no wings and I suppose I'll get by
Dreaming of flying through air one day
Atavians soaring through the night sky

Their beauty makes me want to cry
This vision enhanced by dawns first ray
How I long to join them as they fly

Often I pray although there's no reply
Whatever the price, I am willing to pay
Atavians soaring through the night sky

Watching their freedom, I have to sigh
Although its futile I again start to pray
How I long to join them as they fly

With envy I stare as my mouth goes dry
Bound to earth I am forced to stay
Atavians soaring through the night sky
How I long to join them as they fly
