To create a custom signature:

  1. Go to your user page. It should be something like http://www.achaea.com/lore/User:Name.
  2. Create a new page at something like http://www.achaea.com/lore/User:Name/sig1. In reality, this can be named whatever you want.
  3. Add your signature in MediaWiki syntax and HTML. An example can be found here. Don't worry about timestamps; those will be appended later.
  4. Create another sig page - http://www.achaea.com/lore/User:Name/sig or something. Again, it's no big deal what you name it.
  5. In your second sig page, enter the location of your first sig in this format: {{User:Delphinus/sig1}}
  6. Go to your preferences page. Under the User profile tab, check the box that says "Raw signatures (without automatic link)." In the Nickname box, type your second sig and user name in this format: {{User:Delphinus/sig}}
  7. Save your preferences. Now, when you type in your sig via -- ~~~~, it'll use whatever you've created, plus a timestamp.

Truth be told, the two-sig thing is completely optional. However, it keeps your signature from cluttering up talk pages and the like, since otherwise, it would populate the page's text with verbose HTML and MediaWiki syntax at every instance.
