"Celebrating the New Year"

by Madelyne

She looks out the window of her room in the Boar

And sees a snowy city street, but nothing more.

A feeble voice yells for help. She opens the sash

And watches below where the citizens madly dash.

Looking away from the window of her room in the Boar,

The rajamala girl casts a furtive glance at the door.

"Thief," citizens cry, wringing their hands in despair

As the sound of marching soldiers fill the night air.

She leans out the window and cocks her head to the east.

And hears someone ask, "Did the CCG catch the beast?"

For protection she touches her tattoo of a cloak.

She'll not be victimised like that other bloke!

Then quickly she closes the window of her room at the Inn,

And with a surreptitious glance, her eyes go dim.

Noises begin to drift in from the main floor down below.

She rubs her hands selfishly. Downstairs the noise grows.

After ordering her rattlesnake into her wyrmskin pack,

She casts a last glance at the window, then no looking back.

Adopting a ghostly state, she hides from plain sight;

Then cloaks her actions as the clock strike midnight.

An Atavian hovers outside the window and yes, he's seen

Her. Pondering a moment, he gives his wings a preen.

Thinking no mortal the wiser, she creeps down the stairway

Then enters the main floor where New Years is underway.

He flies away from the window and lands on the ground.

Hiding in the shadows, he waits without making a sound.

The girl evades the crowd as a young bard ends a song,

Her movements misleading anyone who might try to follow along.

Outside 'neath the window, she breaths a sigh of relief.

A masculine hand grasps her wrist, and a voice mutters, "Thief."

Wrenching away, she searches and reveals the man with a sigh.

"I may be a thief sir," she whispers, "But you are a spy."

Moonlight reflects off the window and into the street.

He nuzzles her and murmurs, "This isn't where we agreed to meet."

With a sultry smile she leans close and kisses his cheek.

The Atavian grins crookedly and whispers, "My beautiful sneak."

Leaving the window behind, they flee the snowcapped city

And return to Ashtan, the Atavian and his thief-kitty.
