With footfalls like pinpricks the Red Admiral's walking

Along on a branch toward his Red Lady Love;

All day he's been Sweet-Tangerine-Nectar stalking,

Now sweet treats he brings her, his amour to prove.

It's not quite a footfall,

And not quite a heartbeat,

It's the strum of the wing

Of the Red Admiral.

With heartbeats unheard but to smallest animules

The Red Admiral's suit, just as pressed, is approved;

She grants him to mount her, o'er her now his love rules,

And I, watching fast, fast to my song am moved.

It's not quite a footfall

And not quite a heartbeat,

It's the strum of the wing

Of the Red Admiral.

With footfalls as gentle as his I come walking

To the windowsill o'er which the hand of my Love

Accepts my small gift; the Dream-Bugs I've been stalking,

Which I give to her now, as my amour to prove.

It's not quite a footfall

And not quite a heartbeat,

It's the strum of the wing

Of the Red Admiral.

With heartbeat aroused, she watches the animules

Mate, and she smiles, my present's approved.

His passionate flutter, his light toe-tap Love rules,

And she, watching fast, fast to passion is moved.

By not quite a footfall,

By not quite a heartbeat,

By the strum of the wing

Of the Red Admiral.
