Ptarmigans are ground birds native to northern tundra regions, particularly numerous in Wegava Valley where they are hunted. The small grouse has snowy white plumage with black tips. A brow of red arches over dark eyes, and its sharp black beak is well suited for feeding on small shrubs and insects. Pale down feathers protects the bird's legs from the harsh winter climate, and four tiny black claws extend from the toes of each foot.
