Shimmering softly, the armoured backs of these iridescent black insects reflect the few rays of light that stream through the canopy overhead. Two long, horn-like mandibles protrude from their square heads. The upper horn is large and curves dramatically down towards the smaller, straight horn, their sharp tips nearly touching. Their entire bodies are covered with fine, glistening hairs, and twin pairs of antennae with round, bulbous tips extend out ahead of them.
