Bold as brass He stood there,

Blithely sending a shining coin flipping through the air.

A rogueish gleam within His eye,

A cocky grin upon His lips.

"A little wager I have for you,"

His voice like honey, sweet,

"Just a tiny trifle really."

Over and over spins that small sovereign.

High into the air it flies,

Tumbling down to be caught again.

With bated breath he world watched,

Hope and fear combined to steal our collective air.

"What have You to lose?" He taunted,

"A world of dirt and dust."

Cruel laughter filled the air as a bargain was struck.

And so once more, that coin did fly,

Soaring impossibly high and fast.

Deafening, yet soundless, came the fall of Luck.

The dastardly blade appeared from no where,

Hurtling towards that coin.

Powerless to stop it, all watched in disbelief,

As the two pieces fell and disappeared.

His once bright light extinguished,

His carefree laugh forever lost.

Brave and noble Hermes,

Risked it all for us.
