Geography

The municipality known only as the Ettin City is located in the root system of Yggdrasil. It is a crude city, hewn from the red-tinted earth below the World Tree. Its subterranean tunnels cross this way and that, some intersected with roots, some stanchioned with elegantly-carved pillars.

History

The Ettin City was discovered by Achaeans in 758 AF, when interplanar pathways through Yggdrasil became open after the escape of Pazuzu from the Prime Material Plane.

Inhabitants

  • Others include an array of ettin guards.

Culture

The tunnel city is a study in opposites, beauty and uncleanliness cohabitate in every aspect. Bare, trash-laden dirt floors contrast with impressively-carved wooden panels and highly-decorated ceilings. Motifs of the natural world such as dryad statues, sparrows, flowers, and the Gaian lemniscate are found everywhere. The ettin craft defines them but so do their hoarding impulses: towering piles of refuse, the detritus of woodworking, can be found throughout the city whilst the stench of litter and unwashed bodies seems to permeate everything. Though the ettin are a simple people, the motto "two heads are better than one" pervades here: the two-headed giants look upon outsiders with disdain and disbelief, most considering themselves more intelligent and in better company than single-headed humanoids.

Flora and Fauna

The city and its surrounding root system are home to a sparse assortment of flora and fauna. Hairless moles scamper here and there along a channel lit by bioluminescent insects. Cave crickets and aggressive thopterans are occasionally sighted in the reaches outside of the city.
