Standing on the roadside, hopin' I could catch a ride,<br>
and 'lo! Came the Carriage of Cyrene.<br>
I climbed aboard, said a prayer, wishin' he could take me where<br>
the trees are always bloomin' and the leaves are always green.<br>

"Hey you! Where to?" Came a tenor, clear and true.<br>
"Make your choice," said the voice. "I haven't got all day."<br>
Tally-O, here we go with a passenger in tow.<br>
Tally-hey, to the sunset and away!<br>

After miles of mountain trail and a mug or two of ale<br>
we were singin' like we'd been friends all our lives.<br>
"I could show you where the girls are sweet an' let 'em sweep you off yer feet.<br>
Forget about our sorrow and especially our wives!"<br>

"I'm afraid I must decline," said I. He didn't bother asking why,<br>
but on we rode into the dark of night.<br>
Then we stopped, I got out, and in the dark I heard him shout:<br>
"Here we are, safe an' sound. You knew I'd get you there all right."<br>

Imagine my amusement when I turned to say farewell again,<br>
and off had gone the driver to catch another fare.<br>
"Tally-hey!" I heard him say as I watched him ride away<br>
and he waved to me with proud Cyrenian flare.<br>

Carriage drivers in Cyrene are the best you've ever seen,<br>
and you never have to worry ‘bout the price.<br>
Tally-hey, and away 'til we see the light of day!<br>
Tally-O, here we go to the sunrise!<br>
