All around Sapience, the snow was falling in
Flurries and gusts.
We stood abreast and huddled close.
Tucked our freezing paws into
Warm woolly mittens.
Our breath now visible in steaming clouds.
Even the guards clutched at their weapons just a little tighter.
I could feel my eyelashes freezing as I blinked.

Then came darkness.

From the clouds, waves of Mhaldorians brandishing
Their swords,
Their staves,
Their puppets,
And their daggers.
"No," cried out a small child, huddled in her rags.
"Please, it's Logosmas!"
A silent hush passed over the enemies and friends.
Another small boy joined in, his fingers stiff and blue.
"Please, just for today, can we shed cheer and not blood?"

One man stood out above the rest.
He placed a gentle, caring, curved and clawed
Hand upon the orphan's shoulder.
A smile crept across his features.
The guards stood frozen, watching in awe.

A flash of silver and, in an instant,
She had been cleaved in two.
Entrails and blood swept across the city streets.

The man began to laugh.
It started off small and quiet.
Then
Brilliant and pealing.

"Deck the halls," he murmured.

I watched in awe and held my breath.
One by one, each child was mutilated and sent to their knees.
Cries of outrage and fear rang from the city streets.

Soon, from house to house.
From lamp to lamp.
The streets of the city were decked with intestines.
Boughs of hearts and kidneys.

"Merry Logosmas!" The cries rang in unison.
Each warrior dropped packages
Wrapped in silver
Wrapped in gold.

One girl had been spared, if not by accident, but to relive the memory.
She tugged at a bow.
Slowly, it peeled apart to reveal
The severed
Bloody
Eyeless
Heads

Of many once beautiful guardian angels.
