:You can send it tells (as opposed to the "Only alive, sentient beings can receive tells." response when trying to tell to things that are clearly creatures); it says "I have nothing to sell" when asked for wares (as opposed to "[definite creature, not a denizen for sure] has nothing to sell to you" - no talking!).. I'd call that sentience (characteristic only of denizens), wouldn't you? I wasn't the first to categorize city guardians as denizens, by the way.
