Spoken languages are a means of communicating with others. In addition to city and racial languages, some denizens may have their own language, which may or may not be possible for adventurers to learn.

All adventurers begin life in Achaea able to speak their racial language and the common language: Achaean. Upon joining or becoming allied to a city, one will magically be able to both speak and comprehend that city dialect. There are several language tutors throughout the land who will teach you to speak the language of other races, provided you have the language lessons and gold to do so.

A necklace of fluency sold at auction in 625 AF allows its owner to both magically understand and speak all adventurer-capable racial languages.
